Classic American goulash

In the American South and Midwest, Classic American Goulash (often called “Slumgullion” or “American Chop Suey”) is the ultimate one-pot comfort meal. Unlike Hungarian Goulash, which is a slow-cooked beef stew with paprika, the American version is a nostalgic, tomato-based macaroni and beef dish.

It shares a similar DNA with Homemade Hamburger Helper, using the starch from the pasta to create a thick, savory sauce that clings to every noodle.


The “One-Pot” American Goulash

1. The Ingredients

  • The Meat: 1 lb Ground beef (lean).

  • The Aromatics: 1 Large onion (diced) and 3 cloves garlic (minced).
